Auckland, Feb-3 News: New Zealand bowlers displayed a scintillating performance to help the side claim a huge 159-run victory against Australia in the opening ODI of the three-match Chappell-Hadlee series here at Eden Park on Wednesday.
After being asked to bat first, New Zealand posted a huge total of 307-8 in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to openers Martin Guptill (90) and Henry Nicholls (61).
Skipper Brendon McCullum and Mitchell Santner also provided substantial support to his side by contributing 44 and unbeaten 31 respectively.
In reply, Australia were bundled out for just 148 runs inside 25 overs, with Matthew Wade being the top-scored for the tourists with mere 37 runs.
For New Zealand, Trent Boult and Matt Henry bagged three wickets each while Mitchell Santner took two wickets.
The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy was introduced in 2004 and named after the legendary cricket families in Australia and New Zealand.
The series was contested at least once a year till 2010 and was revived from 2014.
As of now, Australia lead the overall head-to-head, winning four series out of nine times.
The two sides will play their second ODI of the series in Wellington on Saturday.
